The Salvation Army Celebrates 125 Years of Service in Los Angeles
On May 8th 1887 The Salvation Army held its first meeting in downtown Los Angeles at the corner of Temple and Broadway. This was the beginning of a social service movement that has expanded, evolved, and grown to be one of the hallmark institutions in the city. Now, 125 years later we are still dedicated to our mission, working 365 days a year to provide social services to those most in need.
We will be celebrating this milestone all year long, recommitting ourselves towards our continued work in the community. The 125th Anniversary festivities will kick-off with a day of service event on May 8th 2012 in downtown Los Angeles. The celebration will continue throughout the year, check back for upcoming events and click here to learn more about LA 125!
Having never missed a Monday night in 32 years of serving dinner to those needing a meal in Compton, Calif., Mary Lawson, 68, retired as head chef of the Compton Corps' Love Kitchen on April 30.
In a surprise ceremony before her final dinner for the community as head chef, friends and staff of The Salvation Army alike thanked Lawson for her unwavering service. Each week-and on Thanksgiving and Christmas day-the Love Kitchen serves dinner to 80 people on average, which equates to roughly 150,000 meals served during Lawson's tenure. "You never turned nobody away," said one woman who ate at the kitchen in its early days. More
On May 8, 1887, a small but determined group of Salvation Army Officers and congregants gathered on the corner of Temple and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles and conducted the organization's first open-air meeting in the City of Angels. Exactly 125 years later on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 9AM at Nokia Plaza, The Salvation Army will conduct an open-air meeting of another kind, complete with a traditional Salvation Army brass band, recognition from local and federal agencies, and historical artifacts from The Salvation Army's past. All celebrating the fact that from humble beginnings on a L.A. street corner, The Salvation Army has grown into one of the most effective, efficient and vital social service providers in the city. The San Gabriel Corps, like so many other Salvation Army entities, has tried to fill the gap caused by cutbacks to the public social safety net, by hosting its Youth Learning Center. The Youth Learning Center provides much needed after school tutoring to under-served children in the community. But the Center had a budget short fall of $25,000 and faced closure. Moved by a desire to give back to the community M.C. Gill Corporation and CEO Stephen Gill generously decided to make a $25,000 donation to The Salvation Army San Gabriel Corps allowing the Youth Learning Center to remain open and provide much-needed services to the local community!
