On May 8, 1887, a small but determined group of Salvation Army Officers and congregants gathered on the corner of Temple and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles and conducted the organization's first open-air meeting in the City of Angels. Exactly 125 years later on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 9AM at Nokia Plaza, The Salvation Army will conduct an open-air meeting of another kind, complete with a traditional Salvation Army brass band, recognition from local and federal agencies, and historical artifacts from The Salvation Army's past. All celebrating the fact that from humble beginnings on a L.A. street corner, The Salvation Army has grown into one of the most effective, efficient and vital social service providers in the city.

The Youth Learning Center provides much needed after school tutoring to under-served children in the community. But the Center had a budget short fall of $25,000 and faced closure. Moved by a desire to give back to the community M.C. Gill Corporation and CEO Stephen Gill generously decided to make a $25,000 donation to The Salvation Army San Gabriel Corps allowing the Youth Learning Center to remain open and provide much-needed services to the local community!
